How EV charging cost is modeled

This calculator estimates home charging cost from a transparent energy model. First, monthly charging demand is derived from driving behavior: monthly kWh = (daily miles x days per month) / vehicle efficiency (mi per kWh). Next, the tool applies your selected utility context and charging schedule to compute energy cost by time period, then adds a configurable share of fixed charges for a more realistic all-in rate. This framework lets you compare how charger power, departure time, and off-peak charging windows change total cost.

Address input adds accuracy because electricity price is not only state-dependent; it is territory- and provider-dependent. Service-area detection helps map you to the correct utility and available rate family before cost math runs, which avoids using an irrelevant plan profile. For many households, simply shifting charging into lower-priced windows can materially reduce cost per 100 miles versus unmanaged charging. Final utility bills can differ, but this method is effective for planning and scenario analysis.
